An Analysis of the Characteristics of Drinking Portrayals in TV Programs: Focused on Drama and Entertainment Show

Abstract

|
Objectives: This study aims to analyze drinking portrayals in TV dramas and entertainment shows.
Methods: The subjects of this study are 57 dramas and entertainment shows enjoyed by adolescents from January to June 2020. During the same period, 1,107 units are aired from 57 dramas and entertainment shows. We analyzed the structural characteristics and contents of drinking portrayals.
Results: Drinking portrayals were described 1,172 times in 56 out of 57 dramas and entertainment shows and 114.18 seconds. Based on the broadcast time of the drinking portrayals compared to the total broadcast time, drama airs the drinking portrayals longer than entertainment show. Drinking portrayals most frequently depicted harmful drinking behaviors such as one-shot, bomb shot(poktanju), binge drinking, and etc. These portrayals tended to show the drinking behaviors as it is in dramas.
Conclusions: Dramas and entertainment shows depicts drinking portrayals 1.1 times per units. Drinking portrayals in TV can affect adolescent¡¯s positive attitude toward alcohol, and alcohol consumption. So, Regulation on drinking portrayals need to be reinforced and a national consensus should be formed on this.
